Advanced Practice Nursing: Pioneering Practices in Palliative Care

November 19, 2002

In July 2001, Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care convened a group of advanced practice nurses (APNs) to hold a conversation on the state of palliative care advanced practice nursing in the United States, to identify gaps in and barriers to that practice and to develop strategies for the future. The report on this important gathering of APNs working in the field of palliative care is now available on the Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care Web site.

Accompanying the monograph is a position statement endorsed by 24 American nursing leaders. The statement describes the unique qualifications of advanced practice nurses for providing comprehensive, effective, compassionate and cost-effective care at the end of life, and includes a call to action to recognize APNs as a valuable resource in our nation's efforts to improve care and quality of life for Americans and their families living with advanced, life-limiting illness.
